Why Do Bulk Density and Oil Absorption Matter?

The two big practical consequences of the heavy vs light difference are loading level and resin demand:

  • Heavy calcium carbonate allows higher loading thanks to its low oil absorption and high bulk density; more filler with the same resin means lower cost. It is therefore the main volume filler in paint, plastics and construction chemicals.
  • Light calcium carbonate consumes more binder due to its high oil absorption and low bulk density, but this “disadvantage” becomes a function in some systems: it provides thixotropy, prevents sagging and gives a matt, full body. It is preferred in sealants, adhesives and some premium coatings.

How Is Bulk Density Measured and Why Does It Vary?

Bulk density, the property at the heart of the heavy vs light distinction, is measured by pouring a known mass of powder freely into a standard volumetric container (such as a graduated cylinder). Two values matter: poured (aerated) bulk density and tapped bulk density. When you tap or vibrate the powder, the voids between particles shrink and the tapped value comes out higher than the poured value. In PVC plastisols, sealants and adhesives, light calcium carbonate (PCC) is preferred precisely because of its high oil absorption and fine, controlled particle structure. These properties create body (thixotropy) and sag resistance in the liquid system: the product stays put on a vertical surface without running, yet spreads easily during application. The fine PCC particles also provide a reinforcement effect, improving the mechanical strength and surface quality of the cured sealant. Heavy calcium carbonate (GCC), by contrast, is used in the same products for economical high loading; most formulations use both together — GCC manages volume and cost, PCC manages rheology and reinforcement.
