Calcium Carbonate in the Cable Industry

Micronized calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) is one of the most important functional fillers used by the cable industry. Both natural and stearate-coated calcium carbonate are used in cable jacket, insulation and filler compound formulations, directly influencing mechanical strength, flame retardancy, electrical insulation performance and surface quality of the finished cable.

At Aydın Madencilik, we manufacture natural and coated micronized calcium carbonate from our own licensed calcite quarry at our Bursa Gemlik facility. Our cable-grade products are supplied to power cable, telecommunication cable and special cable manufacturers across Turkey and Europe.

PVC Cable Jacket Production

In PVC cable jacket compounds, calcium carbonate is the primary functional filler. It improves mechanical performance, flexibility and flame resistance while optimizing compound cost. Our coated grades — AY 108K (8 µm) and AY 210K (10 µm) — are preferred in PVC cable jacket production thanks to their stearic-acid surface treatment, which delivers excellent polymer compatibility and processability.

PE and XLPE Cable Insulation

In polyethylene (PE) and cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cable insulation compounds, coated calcium carbonate reinforces mechanical properties while maintaining electrical insulation performance. Our AY 212K (12 µm) and AY 215K (15 µm) grades offer narrow particle size distribution and high dispersion performance suitable for low-, medium- and high-voltage cable insulation applications.

HFFR — Halogen-Free Flame Retardant Cable Compounds

In halogen-free flame retardant (HFFR / LSZH) cable compounds, calcium carbonate is used together with aluminium trihydroxide (ATH) and magnesium dihydroxide (MDH) to deliver flame-retardant performance and reduced smoke density — a key requirement for EU low-smoke zero-halogen cable standards. Our natural grades AY 108, AY 210 and AY 215 provide an economical filler solution in HFFR formulations for building wire, marine cable and rail-grade cable applications.
